    Wish We Weren't Here...

Ivan is snoring next to me, Joaquin is sleeping in his room for the first time in four nights. We're ready to start a new week. Ivan goes back to work tomorrow afternoon.

Joaquin loved the flight both to and from San Francisco. He said he was scared, but I could tell he was excited. And a six year old does very well on a two hour flight. Books and video and a dad who builds an interest in maps, directions and airplanes helps.

It is difficult traveling with a headstrong six year old. More difficult because we're all together 24/7. I remember when I was little I was frequently embarrassed by my famly on those few vacations we took together because we would always argue about something. Or worse, we'd bring along another embarrassing family member who'd do something like hit on the cast members at Disneyland, much to my chagrin (and confusion, seeing how I always thought he was gay).

That doesn't happen very often anymore. Last time was Grandma drinking and dumping all the beer she bought in Mexico when she found out they wouldn't let her bring it across the border, because, "Damned if I'm gonna let them take it home." It did happen with my own family, Ivan, Joaquin and I this trip. There was a point where I was embarrassed to be with them and it brought me back to the old days and I thought, what's the common denominator? Me, of course, so I quickly got over myself and just walked six feet ahead.

I'm so sad to be home. We enjoyed expensive meals, cool air, which turned into cold air and walks, lots of walks. I start getting hives when it's too cold, but I savored every second, even as I scratched at my red, bumpy legs.

We got to San Francisco Wednesday night. Our flight was delayed over four hours because there was no crew. What's that about, United? After stopping by the hotel, we made our way for dinner at Swiss Louie's at Pier 39. My beef overdose began here when I had a steak. Then we walked down to look at the cable cars and feel the cool air.

We went to Golden Gate Bridge where I was impressed by the speedy clearing of an accident which couldn't have been more than 10 minutes. Here it takes forever. Muir Woods was awesome and we made an unexpected discovery found while driving through (getting lost in) the woods: Stinson Beach. We ate at The Stinson Beach Grill had the BEST dessert, had a very good hamburger and a spice apricot mango streudel in the shape of an egg roll. Yum! Later we made our way down to Chinatown for dinner at The Oriental Pearl Resaurant where Rachel Ray ate on $40 a day! It was good, not great, but good and they had very good service. Kind of reminded me of the Super Dragon where we usually eat at home.

Friday we took a train through the forest to Santa Cruz and the beach. We were supposed to return in time to visit with Thomas the Tank Engine, but it didn't work out that way. One little boy was slightly disappointed but worked his way through that disappointment and impressed a saleslady who gave him an eight dollar Thomas balloon to try to make up for said disappointment.

Saturday started with a tour of the ballpark. I've always wanted to go just for the view of the bay. We took a cable car and went for some rides on BART. Walked around the pier, went on a tour of SS Jeremiah O'Brien and lots more walking. We didn't eat lunch anywhere noteable, except to say that Joaquin did get two Simpson toys during our trip, and I had another steak, and I experienced a Philippine shaved ice, called Halo-Halo, that was so good, um, except for the beans--not that they tasted bad, just the idea of beans in my dessert was not becoming to me. We did have a very late, very unhealthy, but very fun dinner at Mel's Drive-in.

Sunday we only had a few hours before we left so after a nice breakfast at the Country Cottage Cafe, a tiny but tasty breakfast and lunch restaurant near where we stayed, we went to Alamo park in front of the famous painted ladies and stopped by Golden Gate Park, which is so extensive that we could have never seen everything before we left.

While there, I fell in love with a radio station, radio alice, which, I swear, was programmed by me. (Except that Gravity song by John Mayer.) I'm so glad I have the Internets so I can listen every day. This radio station played a lot of what I called, "The Whistling Song," which I told Ivan would be mine. Once I discovered it is, Young Folks, by Peter Bjorn and John, it did, in fact, become mine. I also told him this song would stay with him and reveal itself when he'd long thought he'd forgotten it. Guess what he was humming today? Gotta love the Internets: I found this version which I like very much too.

During this trip, Joaquin learned the true meaning of Gift Shop. That was the place he always wants to visit first. I must admit, it's usually the same for me, but I resisted the tchotchkes for a couple of well picked souveniers for me and mine.

Overall, we had a good time. Joaquin liked the airplane, ship, train and hotel room. Still, we decided that San Francisco is for lovers, not six year olds. We're leaving Joaquin home with Grandma next time we come.

Below is an example of the skills learned by travel: A LEGO airport and bridge built by a very tired six year old.

    ...Four Days Later

ANOTHER lost tooth. Happened right after Tio Danny's birthday dinner. This time the front left. Joaquin now officially lisps and Daddy has a conniption if he puts his fingers in the space. You'll have the opportunity to see in lots of pictures soon.

    Wednesday Nuggets of Tedium

I didn't cut my hair today! Yea, maybe the compulsive disorder has passed.

We did our part waterwise today. Joaquin decided he wanted to take a bath outside. I was hesitant at first, but he begged, so I got the soap, baby shampoo and his towel and turned on the hose with the garden sprayer and he showered outdoors. It was actually easier than the tub, didn't use as much water, and the grey water went right into the grass. He decided it was cold. I told him sorry, but the hose didn't have a water regulator. I'd shower out there too but I'm afraid to frighten the neighbors. Yikes!

I didn't go to work today. I woke with a bad headache. I hate calling in. Since I work parttime, it seems like such a waste. Suck it up for a few hours, but today, I couldn't for a number of reasons. Fortunately, I'd gotten the bulk of what I wanted to do done yesterday.

Oh, I almost forgot: Joaquin started his gymnastics class yesterday. Boy, did the coach give him a workout. He's definitely not a natural, body type or otherwise, but I admire that he stuck in there, even when it hurt. They did floor stretches, splits, etc.

He was good walking the balance beam on the floor, but the one that was two feet in the air had him shaking. He hurt himself trying to climb off instead of jumping off at the end. And they did rolls. You know the rolls we all did as kids where we tuck in our heads and roll our legs over? He's never done one! They did cart wheels. He has no idea.

The coach worked very nicely with him. Plus, she never let them sit the entire hour. They had to hop when they finished their exercise, just to keep their muscles warm. He didn't complain about being sore today as I thought he would. I asked him what his favorite part of gymnastics was. He said, "Sitting." Ha!

He doesn't want to go back, but I bribed him with a Toby train at the end of the week. Now that daddy's fixed Toby, I don't know what. I'm sure we'll figure out something. I don't mind bribing him for this. Let me tell ya, I was worn out just watching them.

    Tooth On Deck

Bulstrode is holding Joaquin's front tooth until the tooth fairy comes. Joaquin exclaimed, "Tooth on deyeck!"

Even though I saw him with his fingers on a front tooth, I didn't realize one was loose.

Man, I always forget to pickup crappy little toys and stickers for these occasions. I'm such a great mom. :( How many CLTs do I need to purchase and stash to cover the rest of the teeth? Twenty-one?

    Rain!

About 9:00 PM, it started raining! Genuine wet rain!

We're so excited, we decided to save it. I put empty trashs can and various buckets around the patio to collect water falling from the roof. Joaquin thought we needed more containers, so he went into the recycle bin and put various cans, water bottles and such out there too.

I didn't have the heart to tell him that getting water into the water bottle with its small mouth is probably not going to work very well. He was so excited to collect water for the plants. How sweet. And that tin corn can? It'll hold a whoppin 12 ounces of liquid goodness! See if it doesn't evaporate before we can use it.

    Just chillzin...

Still trying to keep cool. You know it's hot here, but add 49% humidity and whoa, you're pouring sweat. At night. While sitting. I always forget that it gets worse before it gets better.

I'm addicted to cutting my hair. Like myself. Almost every day. Even my hair doesn't grow that fast. Must stop now. I don't think this is a side effect of the steroid shot, but you never know.

We went to see "Transformers" at the theater Sunday. Wow, did I enjoy it. As much as, or more than, "Cellular." I know, they're totally different movies, but similar in feeling somehow. The parents were a hoot. I wish they had more airtime, yet I realize the movie is called, "Transformers," not "Sam Witwicky's Parents." Joaquin said he was a little scared, but like I said before, give him an Icee and some popcorn and he'll sit through practically anything.

Oh, I forgot, I watched "Hudsucker Proxy." Another movie that I thoroughly enjoyed this weekend and may have to add to my collection. It was recommended by the computer, you know, "if you like this, you might like this." Some bad reviews, with serious people saying things like, "[M]ade of parts borrowed (or lifted) from Capra, Hawks and Sturges." Actually, I think that was the point of this movie. These people just didn't get it.

    Fifteen Minutes of Heaven

We Phoenicians would just as soon skip the summer holidays. No lollygagging by the pond, no barbeque at the park. It's just too hot. Secretly, the sane ones think those who do these things are a little nuts.

On July 4, you would have found Ivan, Joaquin and I out with the other nuts who feel that it is a parental responsibility to take your kids to see fireworks in person. At the park. For hours. In the nearly unbearable heat. It was one hundred and sixteen freaking degrees!

The things we do for fifteen minutes of pleasure.

Besides that, I didn't get any pictures. You don't want to see pictures of red, sweaty people anyway, do you?

This stuff is really good. A little thicker than Kool-aid almost juice-like. I bought the strawberry flavor too to make a fresa agua fresca. I wish I remember where I bought it.

Not The Sort Of Implants I Would Have Wished For

A while ago, I got a horrible toothache and discovered that I had an abscessed tooth that needed to be removed and that I'd need an implant or a fake one since it was toward the front. I was going to have this done right away. Of course, in my usual fashion, I never pursued any of this.

So, today, approximately six months later, I found myself, once again going crazy with pain. Pain that actually started yesterday while I was doing laundry. This makes me think that laundry is really bad for my dental health.

Anyway, instead of looking for a dentist first thing this morning, I decide to go into work like I'm dedicated or something. I started taking antibiotics last night and I thought I would be feeling better but no, coming home caused the pain to flare up big time.

I'm really bad with my dental care so I don't have a regular dentist. So I started calling and came across a dentist that I'd remembered seeing in our neighborhood newsletter. Just around the corner. So I called and they said they'd squeeze me in. I drove there. Yes, drove just around the corner. He did a quick exam and took some x-rays and gave me drugs.

Just looking at me, you wouldn't know how much pain I was in. I was calm around my coworkers, my dentist, the pharmacist, yet inside, I'm screaming in pain. I even took Joaquin to his swim class! I didn't want to skip it because his class is cancelled on Wednesday already for Independence Day.

I told Joaquin we couldn't stay at the pool long because I needed to go home to take medicine. Medicine, sweet medicine. He saw me wiggle my tooth. It makes it feel better somehow. Shocked, he asked if my tooth was loose. I said yes and explained that when kids loose their teeth it's good because they get new ones, but when grownups loose their teeth it's bad because they don't grow back. I'm so glad for the warning messages my old-age is sending Joaquin.

The dentist gave me vicodin. I don't remember ever taking vicodin before so didn't know what to expect. I thought I might pass out, but I couldn't stand it, so while eating my pintos and cheese, I popped one and laid down as soon as I finished. Turns out I didn't really need to lie down and, although it still feels uncomfortable, it doesn't hurt as much as before. Vicodin kinda took the edge off.

I'm about to go throw a load in the washer. Wish me luck with my teeth.

    A Day In A Blur

I had breakfast on Saturday with my friend, Peggy. That's really about all I did. Once again, Joaquin went to the pool. This time his dad took him. Ivan tried to show off his diving board skillz and came back injured. Figures.

The picture above is from this morning. The "Pussycat Swallowtail Butterfly." Just kidding, that name is from an episode Gilligan's Island. (The Greatest Sitcom ever.) I don't know what kind of butterfly it really was.

Today was "Ratatouille" day. Ivan thought the movie was geared more toward adults than children but Joaquin said he enjoyed it. All I know is that I really enjoyed it, and that's what really counts. No?

After the movie, we headed over towards Joaquin's reading class. His last one. *sniff* I hope we can keep it up as he is doing really well. He's actually reading! On his own!

His instructor, Cathan Bordyn, is really involved in the theater program as ASU as an instructor and actor. Amazing that he can bring himself down to the kids' level. I forgot to ask if he knew Joaquin's cousin, Jonathan, who is currently enrolled in the theater program at ASU.

Each class was enjoyable. Although we were allowed to leave for the two hours the kids were in class, we stayed. It was that entertaining. They read some, he reads some to them, they act out the story they're reading, they do some phonics games, like they have to clap when he says a word that rhymes, like pig and jig or tic-tac-toe, where each team has to come up with a word that ends in "ig," "oy," etc. to get an x or an o. Fun.

After class, we went to Desert Ridge Marketplace. This is where I'd meet my friend Pauline for movie day. I really miss Pauline. *sniff*

Speaking of movies, at "Ratatouille," we saw a trailer for a new Catherine Zeta-Jones movie entitled "No Reservations." I kept saying, I saw this movie! I saw this movie! Ivan said, "Okay, okay..." It was a foreign language film called "Mostly Martha," a movie that was recommended on the Rotten Tomatoes website. I really enjoyed this movie even though I know I lost some of the essence in translation to subtitles, so I can imagine how good it really was. I hope the CZ-J movie does it justice.

I was thinking about chef movies and remembered another I really enjoyed, "Simply Irresistible", with Sarah Michelle Geller. It appears this is a remake of another German film. (Those Germans appear to like their chef movies.) This was a really nothing movie, but I swear I'm totally enthralled each time I watch. I love the scene with the vanilla flowers.

So I'm wondering if I could have a chef movie marathon when "Ratatouille" comes out on DVD. I enjoyed the BBC series, "Chef!," that used to play on PBS, but I'm not sure if I would include that in a movie marathon. This is something I'll definitely be looking into more.
